In these trying times, art can go a long way to distract from the bullshittery of the day to day news cycle. It’s somewhat with that in mind that I dove into the latest production from budding creative Zeltron 2020, “Spaghetti Porno”. For those who may not be familiar with her work thus far, we last caught up with Zeltron through her collaborative work with singer Emily Blue and her video for “Cellophane“. Utilizing aged video textures and various stylistics spanning decades of film, she’s developed a distinct style that gets even weirder on her latest.
As the title implies, it’s essentially exactly a spaghetti porno produced by Low Moon Productions who have collaborated with Sen Morimoto & Nnamdi Ogbonnaya. Don’t worry, it’s on YouTube, you’re good, but it might not be something you want your boss to catch on your screen as you walk by. Part Tim & Eric, part social commentary on the need for attention in today’s world, the short is a trippy move regardless that is short and to the point to keep you into it to the end. A quick glimpse at the work quickly reveals the ridiculous amount of noodles that had to be included for this to be successful.
“I had to go to the grocery store and do some serious calculations — my best friend and I were on the phone trying to convert dry spaghetti mass to wet spaghetti mass and figuring out how much volume that would actually take up,” Zeltron explained over email. “After a LOT of math, we ended up cooking 52 boxes of pasta. We live streamed it and had viewers guess how many 1 gallon bags we would end up filling. It was hilarious because my a few of my friends who are professional chefs ended up getting VERY competitive and staying for the whole show. I still have people reference it, haha. It ended up being 416lbs and I think it was 28 bags? So that took probably 3-4 hours the night before.
We had to transport all of it in garbage bags to location.”
While the set up took some time, the production leans into quick cuts and varied angles to create an odd back and forth between her and a Mario-looking partner in crime. There’s parmesan cheese, pepper, it’s a whole thing. This, of course, also acts as a segue or promotion for her continuing series on YouTube, Pasta & Porno. The series features Zeltron eating different pastas while watching porn off-screen. In addition, the visual operates as a portion of what she calls an “online art installation” that can be viewed on her websites at SpaghettiBabe.com & Zeltron2020.com
She’s got some new ideas and between her work on productions like the one above and her creative direction around the city, expect to be hearing much more soon. Now, if she can just get that spaghetti out of her shower.
