Over the course of the last few years, perhaps no other artist from Chicago has explored more varied corners of soundscape than SaveMoney’s own Towkio, who this week returned with a new visual for his surprise single “Hot Shit” that channels a sort of cult-like energy throughout.
Since breaking through with 2015’s .Wav Theory, Towkio has existed a sort of ethereal force from the collective, floating somewhere between indie eclectic/dance-scapes and progressively-leaning hip-hop motifs that come together as something wholly new in his world. That world comes to life in a sense as he becomes a sort of clairvoyant in this piece, complete with mechanized followers and a lectern to boot. Dude has always been a force with video treatment ideas that pushed the boundaries of his resources for a long time. Now, with the resources catching up with the ability and ideas, it appears he’s set to go on a crazy run that builds on his recent “Drift” unveiling which has since had people talking all across the city and beyond.
Having spent the last couple years as a regular at Rick Rubin’s legendary Shangri-la estate in California, it seems the Chicago native has found a kindred spirit in the shoeless guru. In both transcendental nature of subject matter in songs and the sort of trippy, far-reaching sensibilities of the accompanying assets, the influence is palpable and appropriate and on his latest, Towkio proves once again he’s a step ahead as he gears up for the impending release of World Wide Wav.
