Famous Dex & A$AP Rocky • “Pick It Up”

Before the end of 2017, it’d been a minute since we last heard from Chicago rapper Famous Dex. The “Drip From My Walk” artist took a sabbatical of sorts after a video of him assaulting a woman in a studio about a year and a half ago surfaced on the internet. Having stepped away, he seems to be putting his best foot forward to prove that there’s more to him than the negative headlines have admonished since. Heading into the new year he got his first win in awhile, scoring a hit with A$AP Rocky in “Pick It Up” which got a visual representation this week.

A nice aside to the song itself, which is able to somewhat mimic Dex’s ability to flip flows on a dime, transitioning the tempo several times over and utilizing some small but clever effects throughout to mime that mentality. There could have been more of a storyline or theme to the whole thing, which seems to be set in some sort of Brooklyn Bazaar-type situation, but shit it’s. Dex and A$AP and really the song does it all for me. Check it out below.

Vic Mensa • “We Could Be Free” (Ft. Ty Dolla $ign)

Since dropping his debut project, The Autobiography last year, Vic Mensa has continued to prove himself a leader of the culture beyond just music and bars and with his first official video of 2018 he appears to be ready to underline that sentiment. In his newest visual for the powerful single “We Could Be Free” Mensa draws a direct line through generations of rebel voices fighting for change in a unique and creative way. The video is only available on Apple Music, but Mensa dropped a version on Twitter as well. Check it out below or skip over to Apple Music to catch it there (if you have a membership). Plenty more coming soon.

Plug Migo • “Still Trappin”

MUBU affiliate and self-proclaimed Mexican d-boy, Plug Migo, brings us his latest visual for the smooth “Still Trappin” single. Shot by his long-time partner in crime DADAcreative, the clean video tours his home and built-in studio, giving us an intimate look into his Latin roots, vices, and friends. A dynamic artist, Plug excels in producing, engineering and an enviable flow. All those elements are present in “Still Trappin” and make it a lowkey banger. If you’re just getting hip to Plug, be sure to check out his slept-on project Migo God.

Rich Jones • “Out West”

Rich Jones pleasantly surprised us at the top of 2017 with a full-fledged pop sound in the colorful and emotive “Vegas” EP. The project set off a positive chain of events for him that included a Lincoln Hall headlining gig, a spot in the North Coast Music Festival line-up and nationwide coverage. On its one year anniversary, Jones celebrated by releasing a video for the standout track “Out West.” In collaboration with director Peter Collins Campbell, the video follows Jones as he chases life traveling across America on his way to Las Vegas. Walking through daylight, snow, and rain, the song’s danceable instrumental and Jones’ cheerful vocals make the journey fun and inspiring.
