Mr. Defcee has been busy the last couple months. The longtime MC and local teaching artist, quiet since his 2015 release, Damn Near Grown, has found a renewed energy in 2019 which has resulted in a pair of releases. One of those, his December full-length A Mixtape As God Intended has been one of those projects I’ve had in regular rotation around the office and beyond, but somehow didn’t get down to writing words. In many ways, that tweak on my behalf may be indicative of the space Defcee occupies. He’s reliable, he’s very good at rapping, but part of me wants to keep the secret to myself. His work and the nostalgic feelings it induces is reminiscent of acts like Del The Funky Homosapien, Atmosphere, DoomTree and others, not for the general sound but moreso for the idea that this person may be your secret. At a time when music like everything is shared with abandon, that feeling of truly discovering something can be lost and for that reason I often find myself getting caught up with Defcee’s rhymes when they slide into the shuffle. We talked about it a bit when he stopped by the studio a few weeks ago.

If that wasn’t enough though, the Chicago native proved his intentions in the new year, announcing a new project at his album release show a week ago that manifested itself as the collaborative defprez alongside CashPrez and KnowsTheTime. The result of the trio assembling is a delightfully rhyme-heavy affair that builds on the underground legacy Defcee and in his direct periphery have been cultivating for some time. We’re going to leave this one here and direct you to the music, but keep an eye out for more soon, check out my interview with Defcee below and check out all the new music now playing on Mild Sauce Radio.
